Business Travel AppsRoad warriors and infrequent business travelers alike are after the same things when it comes to being on the road: getting from point A to point B with as little hassle as possible. In a global marketplace the goal of smooth travel is not always a reality, and most business travelers have come to expect some kind of delay, be it a natural disaster, a delayed flight, car rental incompetency or hotels that don’t quite live up to the promises made in the online descriptions. Business travelers have come to expect the worst (and who can blame them), but they shouldn’t have to. Global business travel has grown due in part to the rise of a global economy steeped in technology. So why don’t we take advantage of some of this technology to make business travel easier? Put that smartphone or tablet to work and make the most of your “carry on” technology.

Below is a list of 5 business travel apps I have found to be tried, true and helpful on the road. These mobile travel apps work on Android, iPhone, iPad or BlackBerry platforms (unless otherwise noted).

GateGuru

This is my personal favorite mobile travel app. If you are interested in finding the best food, bathroom, store and internet connection closest to your gate while you wait for your flight this is the app for you. I take a lot of international flights with long connections. Being in a huge airport with limited signs in my native language can be overwhelming (or at least make it hard to find a place to eat!). The best part about GateGuru is that it is populated by user data, meaning it is almost always right as fellow business travelers with time on their hands have provided an outline of same gate surroundings I am confronted with.

TripIt

TripIt has come a long way in a few short years, and is now one of the most popular travel apps on the market. There is a free and a paid version and both integrate with almost every social media platform available (LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook). Premium member services with TripIt Pro provide the user with mobile alerts about flight delays, the ability to track frequent flyer miles and other travel rewards programs as well as a one year free membership to the Hertz Gold program.

FlightView

Even airports use this travel technology. You know those big shiny screens that loom over the crowds, telling people where their flight is leaving from, when it will arrive and where it is now? That’s FlightView technology. The business travel app from FlightView provides color coded maps, flight delay notifications, real-time flight status, gate and baggage claim information and a handy calendar integration feature for your smartphone. This travel app is helpful even when you are not the one on the road.

XE Currency

Knowing how much money you have and how much it is worth seems like an easy task— unless you are traveling internationally and/or you work in several different currencies on a daily basis. XE Currency is the go-to online site for live currency rates and their free business travel app does not fall short of the real thing. Keep track of live rates for every currency in the world or calculate one currency to another with the XE mobile app.

Concur Mobile

This app is not available to the general public, but if you work for a company that consolidates and manages its corporate travel chances are you have run into this one. A lot of people know that Concur Travel is available to them through their company to book travel online, but not a lot of people take advantage of the free Concur Travel mobile app offered to them. I did, and guess what? I love it. It integrates with TripIt (in fact, Concur Technologies actually bought TripIt), it lets me book or cancel air, car and hotel reservations from my phone, and my business travel advisor has access to my reservations. If I am in a bind and need to call her, she can make changes to my travel plans and the updated itinerary is reflected on the app. It’s like having my own personal travel agent in my pocket.
